What is Medical Tourism? |
Medical tourism refers to the act of traveling overseas for medical, dental, cosmetic, or holistic treatment. With MedTrava, that overseas healthcare will be received in a world-class facility at a fraction of the cost in the U.S.
There are many reasons to consider medical tourism for your healthcare needs. Some common reasons you might choose medical tourism are: |
You need an expensive operation in the U.S. and your insurance won’t cover it because it’s a “pre-existing condition.” |
Your out-of-pocket expenses under your insurance plan are so great it is cheaper to go abroad for a procedure. |
You have no insurance and cannot afford treatment in the U.S. without wiping out your life savings. |
You wish to receive an elective cosmetic procedure that your U.S. insurance won’t cover. |
You are a member of an insurance plan that rewards its members for choosing to receive surgeries with its overseas health benefit….a great option where everybody wins! You receive superior medical care and your company can save money. |
Medical travel dos and don'ts |
There are several points to ponder before packing your bags and heading off to a foreign country for surgery. |
Get a complete check up done to see if you are healthy enough to travel. The flights are long and can sometimes easily consume more than 30 hours due to delay or other unavoidable reasons. So, make sure you are ready to miss your good night’s sleep. |
A thorough estimate about your travel and treatment costs is a must. Remember the $6,000 rule, if your U.S. specialist quotes you a price of $6,000 or more for a treatment, chances are good that one or more foreign countries can offer you the same procedure and quality for less, even including your travel and lodging expenses. If your U.S. quote is less than $6,000, you're probably better off having your treatment at home. |
Find the right country for your treatment. If you're seeking cosmetic surgery, Costa Rica and Thailand rank among the most popular destinations. Dentistry will have you exploring India and Mexico. For invasive surgeries, such as open-heart surgery or a knee replacement, make a longer trip to India. |
Before you have departed for your destination for medical travel, make copies of all your important documents you will need overseas. Scan your passport, passport photos, medical records, paper tickets and save them in web based email account. Also keep a record of all the important telephone numbers in your web based email account so you know who to contact if your credit card or ATM is lost or stolen. Never give details to strangers. |
Familiarize yourself with local conditions and laws to avoid surprises. Be aware of any effects the local topography or climate may have on you: If you are sensitive to altitude or to humidity, or to other attributes of your destination, consult with your physician. |
Split up your valuables like bank cards, credit cards, cash, etc. in different pockets or different bags during packing. |
Split up clothes when traveling with others. When you are flying somewhere and especially if you have a few stopovers, divide the clothes between different suitcases/backpacks/bags, etc. If one person’s luggage doesn't arrive at the destination, they'll still have clean clothes available. Airlines generally don't compensate lost luggage for the first 24-48 hours so this will save you money if it happens to you. |
Keep any medication and important papers in your carry-on bag. On long flights with multiple stopovers, packing a good change of clothes is a good idea as bags tend to get delayed. |
Have a maintenance check done on any equipment you will take with you to ensure that everything is in working order before you leave. You may want to research the availability of wheelchair and medical equipment providers in the areas you plan to visit. |
Carry with you your written itinerary and directions of where you wish to go. These can be shown to people who might be able to help you if you are lost. Another useful tool is a point-and-conversation guide. |
Always drink only bottled water; make sure to check the seal before opening it. |
Use your judgment before eating from roadside eateries, partially cooked/ raw dishes, cut fruits/vegetables are best avoided. |
