Overview of Spinal Disc Replacement: |
This information is provided by MedTrava, Medical Tourism experts. |
|
Spinal disc replacement is an alternative to spinal fusion for some patients. During disc replacement surgery, the surgeon will remove the damaged disc and replace it with an artificial disc. This procedure is often considered superior to a disc fusion because healing time is quicker and the risk of complications is minimized. |
|
Candidates for Total Disc Replacement abroad: |
Not everyone is a candidate for the artificial disc. If you have osteoporosis, joint disease, infection, inflammation at the site, or an allergy to stainless steel, you should not undergo a total disc replacement.
To be considered a good candidate for Disc Replacement overseas, you must: |
|
Undergo a trial of non-operative treatment like physical therapy and medication for at least 4 to 6 weeks |
|
Have had no prior neck surgery |
|
Be deemed a good surgical candidate |
|
Experience strong symptoms because of a cervical disc, including arm pain, weakness or numbness and neck pain |

In a disc replacement surgery, the affected disc(s) is completely removed and the disc space is returned to the height it was prior to disease. The artificial disc device is implanted in the prepared disc space using x-rays or fluoroscopy. You will be placed under general anesthesia for this procedure. |

Potential risks and complications |

Infection |
|
Blood loss |

Although these complications can be severe, they are very rare occurrences |

Spinal Disc Replacement Recovery Abroad |
You should be able to get up and move around within a few hours of your surgery overseas, but you can expect to remain in the hospital for 10 days after your surgery. Although this is longer than you would stay in a U.S. hospital, you will benefit from the extra supervision of doctors and nurses during your recovery. You will be able to fly home after your surgeon approves it.
Pain is common in the first 48 hours after any surgery, but you will be able to request powerful painkillers if you need them. You will complete a physical therapy program while in the hospital, and before you are discharged you will be given instructions by your doctor on how to gradually increase your activity once back home. You may need to wear a back brace or bandage to support your abdominal muscles while recovering. |

Cervical disc replacement versus disc fusion surgery |
This information is provided by MedTrava, Medical Tourism experts. |
|
A disc replacement procedure eliminates the risk of dealing with a bone graft, which can be difficult to heal and has a risk of an infection transmission is the bone is received from a cadaver. The disc replacement also minimizes the risk of a patient developing a future cervical disease since the artificial disc allows for more normal neck motion than a fusion. Healing time from a spinal disc replacement is quicker, so the patient is able to return to activities faster. |
